The Australian Share Market and Asian Stocks
Asian markets had a rather volatile trading session today with most finishing up except for the Australian share market and the New Zealand stock markets which both finished under. Following stock prices were the Aussie and Kiwi currencies which both lost slightly against the U.S. dollar and the Japanese Yen.
This was in stark contrast to the U.S. indices and other exchanges in Europe which saw a decent night's rise with the S&P 5oo, the NASDAQ and the Dow Jones all finishing over one percent.
There have been a series of reality checks which have been blamed for the Aussie and New Zealand markets losing out. It started out with the Reserve Bank Governor stating that the real exchange rate of Australia was 'pretty high' while at the same time consumer confidence in Australian was nearing an all-time low for this year.
The approved bailout for troubled Financial Institutions in Spain has also seemingly turned into a double edged sword with the countries 10 year bond yield rising to the highest it has been since the launch of the Euro in 1999. Add to this Australia's Finance Minister coming out to claim that Italy may soon need a bailout due to high borrowing costs and it is little wonder the Aussie market finished under.
Ultimately the major concern continues to be the Greek Election on the 17th. The outcome will most likely illustrate which way the country will go in determining its future in the Euro, while at the same time showing how they will respond to austerity measures already in place and those perhaps to come. The outlook of the European Union seems, to many investors, to be tied to this and that is obviously being translated to the markets. Many investors seem to prefer to sit on the sidelines and wait this one out until they have a better idea of which way things are heading.
Big Picture
It is likely that the markets will have some choppy trading sessions for the remainder of this week. The Australian share market today got hit with a number of different announcements not only concerning the state of Europe, but also the domestic economy.
